Several major investor-owned utilities have decided to embark on pursuing intellectual property, namely patents. One major factor why utilities are deciding to implement an intellectual property strategy is the changes that have occurred due to energy deregulation over the last 15 years. Furthermore, advances in different technology areas have allowed investor-owned utilities to invest money and other resources into areas that go beyond transmission and distribution functions. This includes technologies advancements in solar, wind, and devices associated with the Internet of Things (IoT). This presentation will analyze how changes in energy policies in combination with various technology advancements is creating an opportunity for investor-owned utilities to enhance their company value with filing and protecting intellectual property. This presentation will also provide a survey of intellectual property activities of investor-owned utility companies.
