Engaging Employees in Energy Management

Division Energy Manager

The most effective means of implementing improvements in energy management and efficiency is to engage the people who can directly impact energy use.For most people in manufacturing energy use is not a focus of their day to day activities. Developing an energy management system will ensure a structured program is in place to engage manufacturing staffs to manage energy. What information can be provided to increase the awareness of energy use and the impact employees have on improving efficiency? Once a system is in place, there are several methods to increase awareness including energy treasure hunts, energy assessments, goal setting and recognition.

With limited staff and resources what low cost or no cost assistance is available to improve awareness? There are a variety of federal programs available through the Department of Energy (DOE) and the EPA. This presentation will showcase how Charter Steel was able to leverage the DOE’s Better Plants program to engage its employees to manage energy. The Better Plants program’s resources included the online 50001 Ready Navigator, technical assistance from a Better Plants Technical Account Manager andtraining. Come and see how these resources can enhance your organization’s ability to improve energy performance.
