The objective of this paper is to present the necessary legal requirements for the safe installation of a photovoltaic (PV) system.A PV system is aligned into three areas:Necessary listed components, basic PV system arrangement, and how the requirements of the NEC are met to deliver this system. The primary focus is on how utilization of the 2017 National Electric Code (NEC) Articles 690 and 691 allow an installer to meet this objective. The requirements needed to analyze the circuits for proper sizing and protection of the system will be presented. The necessary disconnecting means and wiring will be evaluated. Next is how to best determine the solution that meets the necessary code requirements while also providing a system that efficiently produces electricity. The outcome of this information will be a PV installation that meets the legal requirements for safety and will provide a reliable renewable energy solution.
