Alabama Power's Smart Neighborhood

Todd Rath
Director of Marketing Strategy, Programs and Intelligence
Alabama Power Company

Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is at the forefront of energy research and development with its Smart Neighborhood™, a connected microgrid community demonstration. This project is centered around a community-scale microgrid comprised of battery storage, solar panels and backup generation. Smart Neighborhood is a state-of-the-art community of 62 homes featuring emerging energy-efficient technologies, materials, and appliances, all connected to the community-scale microgrid. Performance data and energy usage are collected from the homes’ innovative features and will be analyzed to provide insight into how homes can be built and function more efficiently. The project is a collaborative partnership with Signature Homes, Southern Company, United States Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, PowerSecure, and various technology and other vendors. Smart Neighborhood is located in Hoover, Ala. Construction on the community and microgrid began this summer and is set to be completed by spring 2018. This project will demonstrate how utilities can provide increasing value to the neighborhoods of the future.
