Renewable Power Developments: Creating Stability

Timothy Unruh, Ph.D., P.E., C.E.M.
Deputy Assistant Secretary for Renewable Power
U.S. Department of Energy

The power system is changing, and a new type of power is supplying a growing portion of our electrical power needs. As renewable power increases on the grid, we see new challenges in the way it is produced - no longer a dispactachable controllable source, but one that varies in its output. This session will explore some of the challenges that renewable power can bring to the grid, but will also explore ways our research and development is looking at solutions to these new challenges. As we understand the benefits of renewable power, we also can further understand the opportunities that it holds for our power grid.
