This presentation reflects the results from a long-term measurements of the performance of 50 high and low-pressure Solar Water Heating (SWH) systems in all six climatic zones of South Africa. Also 50 electric water heaters we included with the monitoring. The analysis identified the thermal performance of the all 100 water heating systems, developed hot water usage profiles and established patterns of usage of hot water by the homeowners using soar and electric water heaters. The study allowed to provide realistic benchmarking of the electric energy used for water heating and also the respective usage when solar energy is introduced (savings). The measured results were compared with simulations based on the similar SWH system and identical climatic areas of installation. The comparisons of the results was satisfactory.
