Implementing the necessary M&V (Measurement and Verification) protocols for a utility incentive program offers an interesting and unique perspective on the world of M&V.This perspective often contrasts with the more traditional methods of the energy savings performance contract world, e.g. measurement periods with durations of several years.From extrapolating with only 2 weeks of data to innovating due to limited availability of key independent variables, our team is tasked with formulating and executing M&V plans which make the most of available resources while satisfying program constraints.Case studies are examined to illustrate issues encountered in our work and demonstrate the creative solutions developed to overcome.Alternative ways to approximate load profiles, utilize proxy variables, and identify and take advantage of production cycles are considered and demonstrated with examples. Finally, techniques in regression analysis, including the importance of a good model fit and when it is appropriate to explore alternative methods, are presented.The study concludes with and open forum on “stories from the field”, or anecdotal accounts of unexpected and unexplainable circumstances that should resonate with individuals from the M&V community.
