Energy Neutral Wastewater Treatment: Building Resiliency through Renewable Energy

Logan Olds
General Manager
Victor Valley Water Reclamation Authority

Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority (VVWRA) embarked on an energy efficiency and renewable energy production program in 2008.The Authority now produces over 70% of its own electricity with renewable carbon neutral biogas.Currently, VVWRA is building a flow cell battery storage and microgrid to produce power in excess of its onsite needs. These goals have been accomplished by creating alternative business models, mitigating risk and forming partnerships with private industry. This includes a unique partnership to privatize a portion of the facility.By partnering with private industry, the Authority has stabilized power issues at its facility and built infrastructure to become a net energy exporter.
