Abstract

Energy Management SCADA Systems (EMS) have been used by utility companies for many decades as a vital tool in monitoring and controlling the flows of electric power and water in the large utility grids. In recent years, there has been a push towards utilizing EMS in the energy efficiency field to achieve energy reduction through the process of data visualization, analytics, and automated fault detection (FDD) to assist building owners and operators with decision making. The EMS deployed and configured this way, provides ability to remotely monitor the operation of energy-consuming systems, gather real-time data from the field and generate intelligent recommendations on capturing the energy saving opportunities. The presentation will cover lessons learned from a ground-up deployment of an EMS system in the university environment and provide examples of fault detection applications and financial benefits that an EMS can bring to the owner.
